The following printable chapters are from the 12 steps program of AA. Taken together they are a simple workbook for addiction recovery. I’ve also linked to worksheets at the bottom of this page. Those workbooks include questions, assignments, sample prayers, and links to more help online. They are a guide with the goal of simplicity not busy work. Once complete, I’ll upload a PDF version. You can also download our 12 steps printable PDF.
Under each official step, I’ve added Dr. Harry’s paraphrase (DH:) from the the book Being Sober.
My plan is to add my own experience as I work through the steps.
Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Step Program
AA Step 1 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
- DH: There is a power that wants to kill me.
- Read my reflections on being powerless and accepting AA step one.
AA Step 2 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
- DH: There is a power that wants me to live.

- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
- DH: Do I want to live or die?
- Read my summary of AA step 3 turning our lives and will over to God.

- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
- DH: Using examples from your life, understand that your actions were controlled by selfishness, dishonesty, fear, and resentment.
AA Step 5 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
- DH: Tell your entire embarrassing story to someone in a safe, non judgemental setting.
AA Step 6 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
- DH: Decide whether we want to live this way anymore.
AA Step 7 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
- DH: If you want to change, ask for help.

- Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
- DH: Figure out how to make all our wrongs right.

- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
- DH: Fix what we can without causing more trouble.
AA Step 10 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
- DH: Mistakes are human.
AA Step 11 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
- DH: Ask our Higher Power for help in treating others as we want to be treated by our Higher Power.
AA Step 12 (download) and Worksheet (see links below)
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
- DH: Pass it on.
